554 5.7.1 [CS01] Message rejected due to local policy. Please visit https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204137

We received "554 5.7.1 [CS01] Message rejected due to local policy. Please visit https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204137" messages when sending email to @icloud.com mailbox users (happened to 90% of the outbound messages). Those emails are not bulk emails. We contacted [email protected] 3 times with all required info (like domain, business justification and other details) and got no single confirmation emails... I also contacted support and got informed that we need to contact mail service provider for a solution. We don't really understand it was apple server rejected the emails how mail service provider can unblock us?

Want to give it a try if community can help, any advice/replies are appreciated.

Thank you

The general meaning of 554 5.7.1 is that your email is "not allowed". This is, of course, insufficiently specific. Look closely at the error message to narrow it down.

Sender Not Authorized

If the error mentions "Relay denied" or "Access denied", this indicates that you are not allowed to send email through the mail server. Here are some examples:

554 5.7.1 : Client host rejected: Access denied 554 5.7.1 : Relay access denied 554 5.7.1 : Recipient address rejected: Access denied 554 5.7.1 : Relay Access Denied for One Domain 554 5.7.1 : Sender address rejected: Access denied

Make sure that your mailing program is configured to authenticate with a user name and password. Also, the SMTP server may have a requirement that your Sender/From be identical to the email address that you are logging into the SMTP server with. We have an entire article dedicated to this topic here.

Spam Filter

The server may be rejecting the content of the email, thinking that it looks like spam. Here are some examples:

554 5.7.1 : Message cannot be accepted, rules rejection 554 5.7.1 : Message cannot be accepted, spam rejection 554 5.7.1 : Message refused by Dictionary check 554 5.7.1 : Message blocked due to spam content in the message 554 5.7.1 : The message from (<[email protected]>) with the subject of (...) matches a profile the Internet community may consider spam. Please revise your message before resending. 554 5.7.1 : Email cannot be delivered. Reason: Email detected as Spam by spam filters. 554 5.7.1 : [MW01] Message content not accepted for policy reasons

Clean up the body and subject of the email to make it look less "spammy", and try again. We have an entire article dedicated to this topic here.

Blacklisting

It is possible that your IP address, or the IP address of your relaying SMTP server, has become blacklisted. Here are some examples:

554 5.7.1 : Message refused by DNSBL check 554 5.7.1 : Your mail server X.X.X.X is listed at www.spamhaus.org 550 5.7.1 : [RBL] Sender blocked <IP or domain> error 554 5.7.1 : <[email protected]>: Sender address rejected: Blocked by this domain 554 5.7.1 : <[email protected]>: Sender address rejected: Blocked by this recipient 554 5.7.1 : <servername[X.X.X.X]>: Client host rejected: The sender's mail server is blocked 554 5.7.1 : Service unavailable. Client host [X.X.X.X] blocked using SIP invaluement local 554 5.7.1 : ACL dns_rbl; Client host [X.X.X.X] blocked using sa-ip4tset.blagr.emailsrvr.com=127.26.0.2 Cloudmark CSI. Please visit http://www.spamhaus.org/lookup/ for more information on why this message could not be delivered 554 5.7.1 : ACL dns_rbl; Client host [X.X.X.X] blocked using sa-ip4tset.blagr.emailsrvr.com=127.5.0.X Spamcop. Determine which services have you blacklisted. There is a tool for this here. If neither your personal computer nor mail server is on one of these public blacklists, then it must be an internal blacklist. Contact the company through their website or by phone. This topic is also discussed in more detail here.

Direct Delivery not allowed from dynamic IP address

You will get an error if you try to deliver an email directly to the recipient's mail server from an IP address that is assigned dynamically, as opposed to a static IP address which are assigned to web servers. Here are some examples:

554 5.7.1 : You are not allowed to connect 554 5.7.1 : Service unavailable; Client host X.X.X.X blocked using zen.spamhaus.org 554 5.7.1 : Your server X.X.X.X is listed by the blacklist dul.dnsbl.sorbs.net. Please contact your Dial-Up/DSL/Network ISP Provider.

The only solution to this problem is to relay the email through an intermediate SMTP server which is assigned a static IP address. We have an entire article dedicated to this topic here.

Bad Email Address

If you are trying to send an email to a mail account that doesn't exist, the 554 error can occur. Here is an example:

554 5.7.1 : <[email protected]>: Recipient address rejected: user [email protected] does not exist

Maybe the email address was closed by the owner, or taken away from them, or never existed at all. Unlike a 4xx error code, 5xx indicates it is permanent and not just a temporary suspension. You should remove it from your mailing list.
