2023 NFL draft picks Jets

2023 NFL draft picks Jets

The New York Jets were off to the races coming into the game against the New England Patriots on Sunday, winning four in a row on the back of some solid defense and an explosive running game.

This week, however, they ran into a buzzsaw in the form of their AFC East rival.

The Pats took advantage of the absence of Jets rookie running back Breece Hall, and made second-year quarterback Zach Wilson beat them with his arm. While Wilson showed flashes of potential at times, it was also apparent that his decision-making and accuracy were erratic at best. The Jets’ signal-caller put the Jets into bad positions over and over again Sunday, and ultimately turned the ball over four times between three interceptions and a poor turnover on downs.

This is starting to become a boiling point for the Jets, as Wilson was drafted No. 2 overall last year to be the franchise quarterback of the future, and had hopes of his development starting to peak over the horizon by now. But it’s difficult to say there’s been much improvement from what was a mixed bag of a rookie season, where once again Wilson showed plenty of flashes, mixed with poor play and turnovers.

In the three games prior to Sunday’s loss, Wilson hadn’t thrown a touchdown pass, and in the games he has thrown one this year. he has thrown more interceptions with his questionable decision-making. It appears clear that the Jets have limited what they’re asking of him, with the help of an excellent zone run scheme. But when that’s taken away from him, it’s obvious he struggles to make the correct decisions, and keeps turning the ball over.

In a league where having a franchise quarterback you can trust is imperative, and with a potentially stacked class of passers coming into the 2023 NFL draft, it may be tough for the Jets to avoid the conversation about drafting another one.

This front office has built an excellent team through the draft over the past couple of years, and it feels like at this point, they’re one key piece away.

Unfortunately, that piece just happens to be the most important one.

If Wilson doesn’t show huge improvements over the rest of the 2022 season, the harsh reality is that the Jets might be better off looking for his replacement in next year’s draft.

2023 NFL mock draft: Who leaps up the board in latest 2-round projections?

Story originally appeared on Draft Wire

The Jets look like a team poised to make some steady improvements in 2022 after a rough season last year, mainly because Zach Wilson is entering his second season and should be noticeably better. But even if New York takes a sizable step forward this year, they’ll be looking to fill some roster holes in 2023.

It’s still early, but Luke Easterling of Draft Wire released his latest 2023 mock draft, going two rounds deep. The Jets’ first pick comes at No. 5 overall, and he has them taking Georgia standout defensive lineman Jalen Carter. At No. 37, the Jets select Washington offensive tackle Jaxson Kirkland, fortifying the trenches in the first two rounds.

Carter played 14 games for the Bulldogs last season, recording 37 tackles, 8.5 tackles for a loss and three sacks. He’s 6-foot-3 and 310 pounds and extremely athletic, showing good burst off the line when watching him play. He does need to play with better power, but if he improves on his 2021 season, he’ll be a top-10 pick in April.

Kirkland is a tall, long offensive tackle, standing 6-foot-7 and 310 pounds. He’s been a full-time starter since 2018, playing both right guard and left tackle, earning first-team All-Pac-12 honors two years in a row in 2020 and 2021.

Both players would help the Jets in 2023, but as we said, it’s still very early and their draft stock – as well as the Jets’ draft positioning – will change between now and April.

Talk about role reversal.

The New York Giants and New York Jets each had a pair of top-10 picks in the 2022 NFL Draft.

But in 2023, both teams could be sitting at the bottom of the first round.

That’s what happens when you qualify for the playoffs, and both the Giants (6-2) and Jets (6-3) are on track to return to the postseason.

Pro Football Focus is out with its latest first-round mock.

At No. 23, PFF has the Jets selecting Clemson linebacker Trenton Simpson.

Simpson can be head coach Robert Saleh’s New York version of Fred Warner with his ridiculous range.

PFF has the Giants selecting at No. 28 overall, and going with Ohio State wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba.

He’s a high-floor player for a receiving corps in need of such a talent.

However the Philadelphia Eagles, despite leading the NFL with a perfect 8-0 record, could be picking in the top 10 thanks to general manager Howie Roseman, who traded for the New Orleans Saints’ 2023 first-round pick before the 2022 draft. Right now, that lines up to be the No. 8 pick, and PFF has Philadelphia going with Florida State defensive end Jared Verse

He’s still a little wild in his play style, but he has the juice the Eagles covet.

At No. 32, PFF predicts the Eagles will opt for Baylor defensive lineman Siaki Ika.

Ika is a nimble 350-pounder who can get after opposing quarterbacks, racking up 45 pressures since the start of 2021.
