2024 T20 World Cup Qualifiers

The 2024 edition of ICC men's T20 World Cup in West Indies and USA will be played in a new format as compared to the previous two tournaments, with 20 participating teams being divided into four groups of five side each.

As per ESPNCricinfo, with this, the first round that used to take before the Super 12 stage in 2021 and 2022 editions will now be done away with.

The top two teams from each group will advance to the Super Eight stage, where all the teams will get divided into two groups of four each. The top two teams of these two groups will qualify for semifinal. Following this, the final will take place.

In the previous two editions of tournament in 2021 and 2022, the first round featured eight teams that came into the tournament through qualification and teams that finished between ninth and 12th position in previous T20 WC.

These eight teams were divided into two groups of four each. Top two teams from these two groups joined other teams in the Super 12 phase.

12 teams have qualified for the 2024 T20 World Cup. USA and West Indies attained automatically qualification as the hosts of the tournament. Reigning champions England, runners-up Pakistan, India, New Zealand, Australia, Sri Lanka, South Africa and Netherlands have also qualified after finishing within the top eight of the 2022 edition.

Afghanistan and Bangladesh are the other two teams who have qualified as they were the next-best teams in the ICC T20I rankings on the cut-off date of November 14.

Eight spots are still up for grabs and will be taken through the qualifiers.

England are the current T20 World Cup champions, having beaten Pakistan in the final in Melbourne on November 13. With this, they won their 2nd ICC T20 World Cup title.

Rwanda Cricket Association (RCA) have been given the hosting rights for the sub-regional qualification tournament for the African region for the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in USA and the West Indies. The tournament structure has been changed by ICC for this edition, as all the competing nations in the sub-regional qualifiers will play against each other in single round-robin group stage format, instead of the two (2) groups of four (4) teams structure, that was being followed across all the ICC regions.

The two (2) sub-regional qualifier tournaments will take place from November 15th – 24th, 2022 (Qualifier A) and November 30th – December 06th, 2022 (Qualifier B). Men’s teams from Botswana, Rwanda, Mali, Kenya, St. Helena, Seychelles, Lesotho and Malawi are part of Qualifier A event, while Men’s teams from Cameroon, Mozambique, Nigeria, Eswatini, Ghana, The Gambia, Sierra Leone and Tanzania are part of Qualifier B. The top two (2) teams from both the Qualifier events will advance to the Africa Finals in 2023, where Uganda are already placed after they could not advance from the 2022 T20 World Cup Global qualifier B tournament held in Zimbabwe in July, and are now joined by Namibia, who were eliminated in the first round of 2022 T20 World Cup in Australia.

Rwanda Cricket had previously hosted the Africa sub-regional qualifiers and Africa Finals for the 2022 T20 World Cup during September – November 2021. Their successful hosting of those multi-nation events with good safety protocols/procedures in place during the pandemic situation helped them get the hosting rights again to stage the events in Kigali this year. Seven (7) teams in the sub-regional qualifiers have had competitive cricket leading into these events in Kigali, during the ACA T20 Africa Cup tournament held in South Africa.
