I have been going back and forth between getting the X100T or the XE2, the main consideration comes down to cost. Would appreciate some thoughts from those who have used either one, especially for travel. Searching the forums, I have a feeling that users split 50/50 on this.

I like the X100T a lot, seems like the perfect street camera, but it also seems a bit over-priced comparing to other options, it's $1300 new or $1000 used. I can get the same combination for less money with a used XE2 at around $450 plus the 24mm for another $400, even the new XE2S at $700 still comes out cheaper.

I don't plan on getting other lenses, this is my small camera for street and travel, also to cover the midrange. I have a Nikon D300, planning to replace it with a D810, and shoot people/portraits with an 85mm and 70-200mm. I did use the D300 with the 18-200mm while working in Asia for a few months at a time.

Thanks.

PS. I want a viewfinder so I ruled out the other less-expensive Fujifilm models.

Re: 2nd camera for street/travel - X100T or XE2

I often choose to take along the X100S instead of the XE2 because of the size and weight. If those aren't an issue, I'd always carry the XE2 with a couple of lenses.

I don't plan on getting extra lenses for the Fujifilm. Come to think of it, I can always get the 28mm or the 35mm for the D810 for street and travel, a bit more bulky but perfectly doable.

On my recent holidays I took a sony a6000 with 2 lens and a x100s. I made 600 pictures with a6000 and 1800 with the x100s.

In your place I would choose the x100t and if that's pricey get a x100s.

I also didn't plan to buy extra lenses for my XE2 and 27mm pancake combo. After falling in love with this camera I bought 18mm and now I plan to buy 56mm for portraits, and 35 1.4 looks so tempting

To explain my reasoning in more detail:

X-E2 + 23mm is large and heavy compared to a X100.

X-E2 + lightweight lenses isn't versatile enough (for me); an X100 is.

It really is difficult to explain what a great camera the X-100 is. There are various features like the shutter sync at any speed and so on but overall it's a gem. I can see only 2 reasons not to get it...if you have a burning need to use multiple lenses or if you just flat hate the viewfinder. Other than that, go for it.

Re: 2nd camera for street/travel - X100T or XE2

My main camera is a Fuji X-E2. I bought a X100T, complete with both conversion lenses, to use as a backup and also for a daily walk-about camera.. After about four months I decided I would sell one system because I just didn't like having to manage two separate systems, especially when traveling. It was a difficult decision because in the short time I had the X-100T, I managed to collect quite a number of great keepers; more than I realized at the time. But, in the end, the ability to use different lenses won out and I sold the X100T.

Both cameras share the same sensor, image processor, most of the same firmware features, and will deliver the same high quality images.

The X100T is smaller but not pocketable unless you are wearing a coat or jacket with large pockets. It biggest advantage is the dual EVF/OVF with the ERF feature and the EVF is slightly better than the X-E2s. On the down side, the X100T easts batteries and you are restricted to the fixed 23mm f2.0 lens which gives you at 35mm FOV unless you get one or both of the conversion lenses that turn the 23mm into an 18mm or 35mm lens (28mm or 50mm FOV).

The X-E2's biggest advantage has to be interchangeable lenses. The number of lenses keeps growing and Fuji lenses are amazing. Plus, Zeiss provides several AF lenses and Samyang/Rokinon, along with a number of other lens makers, offer a large selection of manual focus lenses. Also with the release of firmware version 4.00, the X-E2 now has a better AF system than the X100T.

Thanks all for your thoughts. I've decided to go for a used X100T or may be an X100S.

I was trying to cover all shooting needs, at the end I just have to remember that the DSLR and its lenses will do that, and I was drawn to the X100 in the first place as a fun street and travel camera to always carry with me. I do take my Nikon DSLR everywhere on my travel too, go figure.

To the OP:

The XE2 plus the 27 if you don't need f2. The semiwide field of view turned out to be exceptionally versatile IMO in 40 years of shooting with Leica CL/40 and m43 w/20.

However, I must say I find the XE1/XE2 bodies - as with most Fuji DX equipment, esp. compared to Sony - too large to be a backup alternative. If Fuji system is to serve that purpose, you need an X-A1, X-A@, or X-M1 and live without the viewfinder.

I did consider the X-A1/M1 with the extra the optical viewfinder. Still a good option I think.

The X-E2/27mm will not get you a hybrid viewfinder, quieter mechanical shutter, high speed flash sync, built in ND filter, and f2.0 23mm lens with an aperture ring. You could wait for the upcoming 23mm f2 lens, but that will make the X-E2 much bigger than the X100T.

Then again, the X-E2 has better AF.

FWIW I see used X100Ts in the 800-900 range which is only a hundred or so more than your X-E2 combo.

Yes, thanks for your note, will keep a look out for the prices on a used one. I particularly like the aperture ring. I wish I had an Asia assignment now, good prices and choices in Hong Kong I'm sure.

Re: 2nd camera for street/travel - X100T or XE2

The one thing I dislike about the 27mm is the lack of an aperture ring. The X-E2 has a silent electronic shutter if that is your need.

I was in more or less ssme dilemma until yesterday - to buy Fuj X100T or add 23/1.4 to my X-T1. I was highly anticipated that x100t would be better choice, but in the end, when I handled one at the store, side by side with 23mm, decided to go 23mm route. Why? Because:

1. Neither combo is pocketable enough, and 23mm lens is not a big as it seems on website photos.

2. 23/1.4 is sharper, faster, and has more character.

3. X100t hybrid viewfinder is gimmick. It is not clear enough as OVF, and has more lag than X-T1 EVF in EVF mode.

4. I like X-T1 controls layout on top of the camera more.

Maybe if you need only 35mm equiv. lens - x100t is a good choice, but having Fuji ILC already, I'd better take 23mm lens.

Re: 2nd camera for street/travel - X100T or XE2

Given that you already have an ILC that you seem happy with (as an ILC), the X100T makes most sense. It doesn't get you hooked into buying lenses for another system unnecessarily, and it's the more genuinely compact and neater of the two, especially for travel.

Of course if you find yourself suitably impressed with the IQ etc, you can always look at one of Fuji's MILCs to replace your Nikon later..

Re: 2nd camera for street/travel - X100T or XE2

I have found my X100T to be a great secondary camera to by X-E1. Although both are not exactly pocketable, I have gotten into 2 kits. My X-E1, 17-55mm standard lens, 56mm F1.2, 55-200 mm zoom, and 14mm F2.8 fit in a Billingham Hadley Pro for most vacation trips. If I am a short business trip to a scenic location and already have too much cabin luggage, the X100T and EF-X20 flash fit perfectly in a Billingham Stowaway Pola bag ("murse") at 1/4 of the weight.

While I was missing the versatility of the zoom, the X100T met most of my street photography needs. I also liked the X100T's wifi connectivity to my smartphone. When paired with a table top tripod, it was a great "selfie camera."

When I purchased the X100T, the X-Pro2 and the X-T2 had not come out yet. I could not convince myself to purchase the X-T1 since the sensor was the same resolution as the X-E1.

I agree about the aperture ring, but the electronic shutter distorts moving subjects so the X100T's leaf shutter is better. While the electronic shutter lets the X-E2 shoot wide open in really bright light, so does the X100T's ND filter.

Plus you can't use the flash with the electronic shutter.
