Windows 10 white bar at top of screen năm 2024

On one (!) screen you can see a white bar at the upper edge, several centimeters high, running over the complete screen (with the 2nd customer partly also black).

The screenshot comes from a remote maintenance session, which means that I see it there too. It can even be seen in the small picture of the preview in the taskbar.

Everything below [the white bar in the upper corner of the right screen] cannot be clicked either. If you drag a window over from the "normal" monitor, it looks quite normal. This only seems to affect windows that have been opened directly on this monitor. It also doesn't always happen.

Could have been considered an isolated case where a graphics driver or misconfiguration caused the problem. But within this thread several users confirmed that report, all of them affected in dual monitor mode. The latest reports dates from March 2019 and refers to Windows 10 V1809. One affected person writes that the display error only occurs 1-2 times a day – then you could fix it by restarting.

I did some research on the web before I posted this blog post. This English-language MS Answers forum post from June 2018 describes a similar problem, but only with a screen. In this post and here a white line appears above apps. In this post someone blames the Electron framework. And here such a white bar for the Explorer is described. But I'm not sure if these are other scenarios.

Workarounds for the issue

Currently, two possible workarounds are described by the affected persons, with which the display error can be eliminated without a restart.

  • Set the display of the screen briefly to 125% by zoom and then go back to 100%.
  • You can press the Windows+P key combination to switch off the second screen. After that you go back to dual-monitor mode.

I don't know of any solution to this problem – updating the graphics driver didn't help those affected. Any of you affected? And if so, is there a known solution?

Addendum: I've escalated this issue via the German Microsoft Answers forum to all Microsoft forum moderators, but no reaction or a fix.

Addendum 2: Two workarounds

German blog readers pointed out two workaround that seems to have helped in some cases.

  • : Check, if an updated graphics driver ist available and install it. After a restart, check, if the issue is gone.
  • : Check if the monitor frequency is set to 60 Hz, and if yes, change ist to 59 Hz. That helped in one case.

To those affected, the question of whether any of these two approaches have helped?

If you see a White bar at the top of the screen in Explorer, Edge, Chrome, Teams, or any other app while gaming or watching videos in full-screen on Windows 11/10, this post will help you. The bar is not usable, and nothing happens even when you right-click it. The problem is related to graphics, the resolution of the screen, and the monitor.

If you see a white bar at the top of the computer screen when using Edge, Windows Explorer, Chrome, Teams, or any other app, here are suggestions to help you fix the issue. This happens because of the resolution or scaling issues. The GPU cannot scale apps, or an incorrect resolution leads to a white bar.

  1. Change Screen Resolution using the NVIDIA Control Panel.
  2. Scale Full Screen for Intel HD Graphics
  3. Restart the Desktop Window Manager process
  4. Tweak the Registry.

You may need admin permission to execute one of these solutions.

1] Change Screen Resolution using the NVIDIA Control Panel.

  • Right-click on an empty area on the desktop, and select the NVIDIA Control Panel option.
  • Switch to Display Settings, and then select change resolution
  • Even if the resolutions are correct, change it to anything and confirm.
  • Change again into the older resolution or the one that works best for the screen, and apply.

This and the next method removes any unwanted white bar that occurs because of the driver issue.

2] Scale Full Screen for Intel HD Graphics

  • Right-click on the desktop and select Intel HD Graphics settings
  • In the settings, locate Display, and then choose the option Scale Full Screen.
  • Make sure the option Override Application Settings has the checkbox marked.

This will ensure that Intel HD graphics settings will dictate how to handle full-screen resolution instead of Windows. The display settings in Windows allow you to set upscaling, and it might have caused the problem.

3] Restart the Desktop Window Manager process

This can be a one-off issue, and restarting Desktop Window Manager can resolve this.

  • Right-click on the taskbar, and select Task Manager
  • Under the Processes tab, locate the Desktop Window Manager.
  • Right-click on it, and select the end task.
  • Sign-out, and then sign-in again, and hopefully, the white bar will not be there anymore.

4] Tweak the Registry

Open Registry Editor and navigate to:

Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar

Here make sure “Locked” is set to 1.

Restart your computer.

If nothing else works, and the problem is recent, you can try restoring the computer to a good state. It may undo whatever caused the problem. However, you will still have to figure out what caused the problem by carefully monitoring anything you update or Windows does through the update process.

Sometimes, a mismatch between the screen resolution and the browser window can cause the white band to appear. To change your screen resolution, right-click on your desktop and select Display settings. Then, under the Resolution section, select a different resolution and click on the Apply button.
