Leveraging Asia’s power to confront global challenges

Asia, which accounts for 60% of the world's population and 40% of the world's economy, has the potential to lead the world in tackling global challenges such as climate change, sustainability, inflation, erosion of democratic values, poverty, economic disparity and so on. The region has abundant natural resources, young and diverse population, technology, and innovative ideas. However, few will refute that the region is still far from fulfilling its rich potential. In the 28th FUTURE OF ASIA, government leaders, corporate executives, and academics will come together to discuss how the region can unlock and mobilize its potential to solve common issues in a multipolar world.

About

In today's world, where it is increasingly difficult to predict the future, the next generation is expected to actively work to improve society and enhance well-being through various activities, including business. Panel discussionToward a society that recognizes diversity in Asia

Asia is a society of diverse people in terms of gender, race and religion. By accepting each other's differences and working in their own way, societies, including economies, can develop. However, it is also true that there is discrimination and disparity due to historical circumstances and prejudice. What is needed to realize a society that recognizes diversity? The discussion will focus on the advancement of women and the protection of the rights of sexual minorities, with examples of advanced initiatives. *This session is based on a proposal by Sophia University students.

Panel discussionEnd of "Post-War": Drifting Global Order and Asia

Russia's conflict with the U.S. and its allies over its invasion of Ukraine appears irreversible and the struggle for supremacy between the U.S. and China over Taiwan and advanced technology is intensifying. As we witness the post-war global order go adrift, there are many who point out that we have entered a new "pre-war" stage. Can we avoid another catastrophic world war? DAY 2-6

Panel discussionAsia's GX changes the world

Preparing for the risk of climate change is a challenge facing the entire world, and not only governments but also corporations are under pressure to respond. The world is watching closely the energy reforms being undertaken in Asia, which is home to many emerging economies, as well as major economies such as China and Japan, and where carbon dioxide emissions account for half of the world's total. To achieve both growth and decarbonization policies, it may be time for Asian countries to seek their own unique approach, rather than following the Western-led approach that has been used in the past.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe was elected by Parliament as the ninth President of Sri Lanka in July 2022. This was following the premature resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa following a public uprising.

President Wickremesinghe has been sworn in as the Prime Minister of Sri Lanka on six previous occasions. He was first appointed PM from 1993 – 1994 after the assassination of President Ranasinghe Premadasa. Subsequently, from 2001 to 2004, he was elected as the Prime Minister to lead the United National Front Government during the Presidency of Chandrika Kumaratunge. In January 2015, he was appointed as the Prime Minister of the coalition Government after the election of President Maithripala Sirisena. His appointment was sanctioned by the Sri Lankan people at the general election of August 2015. Once again, in December 2018, President Sirisena was compelled to reappoint him as PM after illegally dismissing him in October 2018. In November 2019, after the defeat of the UNP presidential candidate, he resigned from his position as Prime Minister. In May 2022, he accepted the invitation made by President Gotabaya Rajapaksa to be appointed the Prime Minister of an interim government to extend his expertise and experience to mitigate the economic and political meltdown in the country.

A lawyer by profession, he was elected to Parliament in 1977 (aged 28), having worked in the Youth League of the UNP from his university days. As the youngest Minister in Sri Lanka at the time, he held the post of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs under President Jayewardene. Very soon, in recognition of his exceptional talents and unique capacity for work, he was appointed to the Cabinet of Ministers as the Minister of Youth Affairs and Employment. Later on, he was given the portfolio of Education. Then in 1989, as a seasoned legislator, he was made the Leader of the House under President Premadasa. He also served as the Minister of Industries, Science and Technology.

President Ranil Wickremesinghe is also the current Leader of the United National Party, the oldest political party in Sri Lanka.

Tran Luu Quang

Deputy Prime Minister, Vietnam

H.E. Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad was Prime Minister of Malaysia from 1981 to 2003. During this period he opened up the country to foreign investments, reformed taxation, reduced trade barriers, oversaw the privatisations of numerous state-owned enterprises and created a world-class physical infrastructure. He also sought to bridge Malaysia’s ethnic divide by increasing general prosperity.

In 1991, he launched the New Development Policy, which emphasised industrial and commercial development and the elimination of poverty. Under Tun Dr. Mahathir’s leadership, Malaysia developed into one of the most prosperous and dynamic economies in Southeast Asia, with a burgeoning industrial sector, an expanding middle class and enhanced quality of life.

In 1995, the Multimedia Super Corridor (MSC) initiative was introduced to make Malaysia a global player in the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) industry.

Malaysia also played a more active role in the international arena, acting as the voice for developing nations in Asia and Africa. Always with one eye on the future, Tun Dr. Mahathir unveiled Vision 2020 in 1991, a blueprint for Malaysia’s journey towards becoming a developed economy and a mature democracy by the year 2020.

Despite his retirement, Dr Mahathir has been kept busy with numerous invitations and speaking engagements locally and abroad.

He is the Honorary President of Perdana Leadership Foundation (PLF), a think-tank set up to preserve, develop and disseminate the intellectual heritage of past leaders. Tun Dr Mahathir is also the Chairman of Kuala Lumpur Foundation to Criminalise War (KLFCW) and President of Perdana Global Peace Foundation (PGPF). Both these organisations aim at promoting global peace and criminalising war.

In 2015, Tun Dr. Mahathir decided to come out of his political retirement and spearheaded a campaign to oust Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak from office. Following that, Tun Dr. Mahathir and several like-minded political leaders had formed Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (PPBM) in which he is the chairman.

Other political parties opposed to the Prime Minister had also rallied around him and elected Tun Dr Mahathir to be the chairman of Pakatan Harapan (Coalition of Hope) as well as naming him as the Prime Minister designate if they won the 14 th general election.

On 9 th May 2018, the result of the 14 th Malaysian General Election declared the Pakatan Harapan as the winner. Tun Dr Mahathir wins sworn in as the 7 th Prime Minister the following day.

In February 2020, Tun Dr. Mahathir resigned Prime Minister.

Tun Dr. Mahathir is married to a doctor, Tun Dr. Siti Hasmah Mohd Ali, and they have seven children and sixteen grandchildren.
