(From Sony lens literature) Sony’s latest full-frame ZEISS wide-angle zoom packs serious imaging power into a light, compact addition to the E-mount lens range for α camera users.

The eagerly-awaited Vario-Tessar T* FE 16-35mm F4 ZA OSS (SEL1635Z) now offers photo enthusiasts a choice of three wide-aperture premium zoom lenses. Complementing the existing SEL2470Z zoom and SEL70200G telephoto zoom, the wide-angle SEL1635Z is a compelling choice for landscapes, interiors and architecture plus everyday shooting.

Legendary ZEISS quality exploits the immense creative potential of the acclaimed α7 Series of 35mm full-frame cameras. It’s also an ideal partner for the complete Sony range of E-mount cameras and camcorders.

The uncompromising optical design features five aspherical lens elements, including one large AA (advanced aspherical) element and three ED glass elements. This helps the SEL1635Z achieve outstanding corner-to-corner resolution and sharpness, while reducing distortion and colour aberration to an absolute minimum – all in a lens that’s both compact and light to carry.

A signature of ZEISS lenses, the T* coating on optical surfaces minimises flare and ghosting to boost contrast, clarity and depth with landscapes and strongly backlit scenes.

A constant F4 maximum aperture allows photographers to achieve beautiful background defocus effects with a shallow depth of field at all focal lengths. Coupled with Optical SteadyShot in-lens image stabilisation, it enables stunning handheld shots in low light without boosting ISO sensitivity and the risk of increased noise.

Wherever you are sent on assignment, the lens’s dust and moisture-resistant design lets serious photographers keep shooting with confidence in the harshest of environments.

  • 9 out of 10 pointsand recommended by lightknight (31 reviews) Reasonably priced, light, sharp and beautifully made. OSS works well Field curvature @16mm, f4 I hesitated buying this lens and now wish I had got it sooner. 16-35 really is a landscape photographers tool of choice very often. I have run this through my own tests and I am reasonably comfortable with the results. On a flat field test ( a bookcase) there is definitely some field curvature at 16mm (the far corners curve inwards) - at very close focus F8 is needed to resolve it - but in real life its not much of an issue if you know its there. These days I tend to use focus stacking anyway for really sharp results as the A7R is certainly capable of exposing the flaws of the hyperfocal methodology and what was a reasonable depth of field for a 15-20MP body simply doesn't cut it now. 20-24 mm is probably the sweet spot for the lens and as far as sharpness goes its outstanding right out to the edge though the very far corners are a couple of points off. All in all my sharpest lens. A keeper for sure. I am updating this review in light of my now shooting with an A7Rm3. In short: the lens seems to have improved markedly part of which can be put down to the increased sensor resolution but the rest, in my opinion, is down to increased tightness in the FE mount. This is now very tight indeed but not dangerously so - the result is significantly improved corners at all settings. reviewed November 18th, 2017 (purchased for $1,150)

performance >24mm, field curvature

The Sony 16-35 is a really good lens. I'd say it's one of the better lenses in the FE system.

At 16mm this lens performs astonishing. This is, if you get what you want in focus, since the lens suffers from quite some field curvature.

Most things (distortion, CAs) are not corrected perfectly, but that's not expected by such a zoom lens. I'd say performance is very good.

However the lens loses most of it's charm (and sharpness), when you go above 24mm. At 35mm I'd call the performance bad. But let's be honest: you don't buy this lens for the 35mm part, but the 16mm ;)

Furthermore the size of this lens is really good! For an f/4 wide angle full frame lens it can be considered really small!

The Sony Vario-Tessar T* FE 16-35 mm F4 ZA OSS is a new wide-angle zoom lens for the Sony full-frame FE-mount cameras (A7/A7R/A7S). It features Optical SteadyShot image stabilisation, has five aspherical elements including a large diameter AA (advanced aspherical) element and three ED (extra-low dispersion) elements, is dust- and moisture-resistant, and has a minimum focusing distance of 28cm with a maximum magnification of 0.19x. It has a near-circular 7 blade diaphragm which creates an attractive blur to the out-of-focus areas of the image, while an internal focusing mechanism means the lens barrel doesn’t move, and a ZEISS T* anti-reflective coating minimises flare. The Sony Vario-Tessar T* FE 16-35 mm F4 ZA OSS lens is available for around £1289 / $1350 in the UK and the US, respectively.

Ease of Use

Weighing in at 518grams, the metal-bodied Sony Vario-Tessar T* FE 16-35 mm F4 ZA OSS feels very well-constructed. It's overall size and weight makes it feel well-balanced on the Sony A7R body that we tested it with, as shown in the photos below. Note that the length of the lens does increase slightly by 2cm when you set the focal length to 16mm.

The Sony Vario-Tessar T* FE 16-35 mm F4 ZA OSS lens boasts built-in Optical SteadyShot image stabilisation to help ensure clearer, sharper handheld shots. This is important as the A7/A7R/A7S bodies don't have a built-in image stabilisation system. In practice we found that the Sony Vario-Tessar T* FE 16-35 mm F4 ZA OSS reliably offered around 3-stops of compensation.

The wide and ridged zoom ring and the narrower manual focus ring are the only external controls of note. Manual focusing is possible via the textured focus ring when set on the specific camera body. The lens utilizes double linear motors to produce quiet and smooth focusing, making it well-suited to shooting video.

Focusing

The Sony Vario-Tessar T* FE 16-35 mm F4 ZA OSS lens has quite a wide focus ring. There are no hard stops at either end of the range, making it a little more difficult to set focus at infinity. Polariser users should be pleased that the 72mm filter thread doesn't rotate on focus.

When it comes to auto-focusing, the Sony Vario-Tessar T* FE 16-35 mm F4 ZA OSS zoom is a quiet and fairly quick performer on the Sony A7R that we tested it with, taking about 0.25 seconds to lock onto the subject.

We didn't experience much "hunting", either in good or bad light, with the lens accurately focusing almost all of the time, and it's also a quiet performer thanks to the linear motor driven internal focusing, making it ideal for movie shooting.

Chromatic Aberrations

Chromatic aberrations, typically seen as blue or purple fringes along contrasty edges, were almost completely absent from our test shots. The examples below show the worst-case scenario.

Light Fall-off and Distortion

With the Sony Vario-Tessar T* FE 16-35 mm F4 ZA OSS lens set to its maximum aperture of f/4, there is very obvious light fall-off in the corners, requiring you to stop down by at least 3 f-stops to prevent it. There's quite a lot of barrel distortion evident at 16mm, and at 35mm there's some obvious pin-cushioning too.

Macro

The Sony Vario-Tessar T* FE 16-35 mm F4 ZA OSS isn't claimed to be a macro lens, offering a minimum focusing distance of 28cm at 16mm, with a maximum magnification of 0.19x. The following example demonstrates how close you can get to your subject at 35mm, in this case a Compact Flash memory card.

Bokeh

Bokeh is a word used for the out-of-focus areas of a photograph, and is usually described in qualitative terms, such as smooth / creamy / harsh etc. In the Vario-Tessar T* FE 16-35 mm F4 ZA OSS lens, Sony employed an iris diaphragm with seven rounded blades, which has resulted in quite appealing bokeh in our view. We do realise, however, that bokeh evaluation is subjective, so we've included several 100% crops for your perusal.
