Show Plot[]Having moved schools frequently throughout his childhood, Fujino has perfected the art of the false smile. Now his fifth school, his well-mannered smile is safely helping him make new friends, but one day, on the school roof, he finds a scarred boy sleeping there. That boy is the “Mad Dog”, the student all his classmates are afraid of. While Fujino is observing him, the boy opens his eyes, and then… Characters[]Fujino[] Amongst the expressions that people show others he considers a smile to be the most simple and effective. Fujino professes to be unfamiliar with classroom locations as an effective way of initiating contact and making friends with other students. It has been two weeks since he transferred schools of which this is the fifth transfer. Fujino explains he cannot remember things like where the rooms are but has more or less remembered the names of the people there. Spotting the scars on Tsukasa's face, that he has a large body and is rough appearing Fujino thinks he is a scary type of person but then evaluates he probably just looks rough. Fujino remembers him from the day he introduced himself in class and that Tsukasa left halfway through. Wide eyed at hearing about Tsukasa's fearsome reputation Fujino also thinks how the wise man avoids danger. Fujino looks favourably at Rika faking her tears as a strategy to get her boyfriend's attention as deceiving people is what everyone does. He further explains to that one would not want to show their true self to just anyone and was against Tsukasa exposing her practice. Fujino apologizes for saying strange things and happily reminds Tsukasa that they are moving classrooms next as he walks past him undaunted. Helping Tsukasa with injuries despite being uncomfortable with blood Fujino hoped at they could at least become friends. Character Article: Fujino[]Tsukada Soutarou[]Waking from his nap on the school rooftop Tsukasa thanks Fujino for the towel he receives which was his own that he threw aside. Tsukasa then remarks that Fujino's face looks shady. He walks out of class without the teacher commenting although Tsukasa was unexpectedly found to be good at maths and science. His feared reputation amongst students and his 'Mad Dog' moniker is a result of him reportedly snapping and starting a fight with anyone no matter who they are. Informing Rika that her constant squealing is annoying he also addresses how she is faking her crying. Finding Fujino in the corridor Tsukasa takes half of the papers he is carrying and helps escort him to the room he is to take them to. Picking up that yesterday and today it seems like he said something bad Tsukasa says sorry to Fujino. He comments fondly that Fujino is braver than he looks yet confirms right away that his smile does indeed look fake. Gently pinching Fujino's cheeks Tsukasa states that smile is the one he likes. With Fujino insisting he come to the nurse's office after a fight Tsukasa allows himself to be taken and led all the way by the arm. Stating that he is not a part of the Yakuza, Tsukasa assures Fujino that he will be more careful to not get into any more fights. He says this is since Fujino cannot handle the sight of blood yet Tsukasa was also helped by him. Tsukasa does stay true to his promise to Fujino but does threaten to kill gang members who threaten his wellbeing. Considering the emotional impacts as well Tsukasa acts comfortable around Fujino. Rika[]A girl mentioned in passing who did not believe that there was nothing going on with someone else. She cries at believing that Watanabe is more interested in someone called Iguchi. Rika begins to apologize at who she accidentally bumped into before seeing that it was 'mad dog.' She ran past Tsukasa then fled again when he later came to apologize without hearing a word. Sasaki[]The Class Representative, he was told to ask Fujino whether it was true that he turned the Mad Dog into his underling where others saw him taking Tsukasa to the nurse's office. After Sasaki wonders if he can hide behind Fujino from now on. He picks up on Sasaki and Tsukasa but does not go into detail when it is lost on others such as Watanabe. Sasaki leaves Fujino to himself in case he glares at him and tells Watanabe to not involve Fujino when the topic of girlfriends comes up. Watanabe[]Rika's boyfriend who assures her he only likes her. Along with Sasaki he becomes friends with Fujino. Like others he considers Tsukasa to be scary. In class Watanabe asks Fujino to let him borrow his notes. Later he remains in a relationship with Rika and attends the same university as her. Watanabe meets with Fujino and Sasaki as well to enjoy themselves in a restaurant. Afterwards he mentions that they always listen to him complain about his girlfriend but that Fujino does not have anyone to talk to as that becomes clear to him. Soutarou's Grandmother[]Addressing her Pomeranian she wonders if he has made a new friend when Fujino is there. Sou is noted as not really resembling her grandson. Commenting that Fujino seems different from Tsukasa's usual friends she explains they are usually big guys with foul mouths. Sou then questions whether Tsukasa is doing well at school. Stating that he has nasty eyes, a big body and a grim expression Sou asks if Fujino is not scared of Tsukasa before being happy to hear that Tsukasa made a good friend. On Fujino's gentle manners Sou enquires whether he has a girlfriend before following up that if she were younger she would not let him escape. Told by Tsukasa that he would not pick any fights anymore she heard that there was someone who worried about him. Omi High School Members[]One member travels to Tsukasa's school and initiates a fight with him during the day. Members are aggrieved since Tsukasa has been doing as he pleases on their turf yet since he was strong they were nice enough to invite him to join their gang but Tsukasa refused. They explain this to Fujino after hearing that he had tamed the Mad Dog after they whack a baseball bat against the wall near Fujino in an act of intimidation. They were a trouble no longer after being decidedly subdued by Tsukasa and Fujino. Tanaka[]A student from High School who is mentioned to have gone to university around Touhoku. Story Introduction[]Fujino has transferred to his fifth school and is making friends. Retiring to the rooftop alone he comes across Tsukasa and whilst he is thanked for returning the towel that was thrown at him they both think and comment how the other is shady. Fujino asks and hears about who he learns was the 'Mad Dog.' Not getting involved Fujino is unable to move past the stairs with Rika crying over the belief that Matanabe likes a different girl. Nearby Fujino recalls how he was seen as a outside by other students in previous schools. Tsukasa was on the rooftop again and joins the commotion occurring in the stairway to raise the matter of Rika using fake crying as a tactic against the boy she is seeing. Fujino is not against it and explains to Tsukasa that not everyone wants to show their true selves. Asked to deliver papers to a Japanese language class Fujino is found by Tsukasa who helps carry them. Tsukasa likes his smile and Fujino's asks his name. In class Fujino hears improbable stories concerning Tsukasa's exploits. He acknowledges that his face turned red when his cheek was touched. When Tsukasa enters the room and they make eye contact Fujino turns away and asks his classmates if his face has turned red. One wonders why Tsukasa came to their school where he would have fitted in much better at Omi High. After Tsukasa gets into a fight with students from Omi High who arrive, Fujino finds Tsukasa on the rooftop and takes him to the nurse's office all the while ignoring everyone struck by him holding Tsukasa's arm. Although he is perturbed by the blood Fujino agrees to check Tsukasa's tooth like he asked. As they speak Fujino says he does not want Tsukasa to get into any more fights which is something he considers. After school Tsukasa brings Fujino to his grandmother's house where he meets her Pomeranian. Fujino hears of the positive changes in her grandson. Tsukasa addresses how other students are under the impression that Fujino has him as his underling but that it is no issue, Tsukasa just feels it is his fault. Tsukasa begins to suggest that it would be better if he did not get close to Fujino anymore but he is firmly against it. Tsukasa is approached by others and students at school are also aware that people from Omi High are looking for Fujino. Hearing that a fight is occurring nearby Fujino finds Tsukasa on the ground where he is concerned that Tsukasa was honouring his promise to him hence the lack of fighting back. Whilst Fujino is worried Tsukasa says it is none of his concern. With Tsukasa having skipped class for four days Fujino follows him home but is confronted by Omi High School members. Fujino is kicked but before he can be threatened with a baseball bat Tsukasa arrives and fends them off and Fujino joins in using a trash can against them. After Fujino thanks Tsukasa for keeping his promise and saving him Tsukasa kisses him. At school Fujino is more mellow and Tsukasa smiles at seeing him. Last week Fujino has turned twenty and is at a restaurant with Sasaki and Watanabe. Fujino and Sasaki attend the same university, Watanabe and Rika are together at a different one. Sasaki met with Tsukasa who attends a university at a nearby prefecture and mentioned that he was going to see his lover which causes Fujino to gag on his drink. Afterwards Sasaki is surprised that Watanabe noticed Fujino react to Tsukasa being mentioned. Sasaki is messaging someone as he assures Watanabe that Fujino and Tsukasa are fine, they just need to watch over them. With nothing mentioned to Fujino, Sasaki had been messaging Tsukasa to share that he was on his way back. Fujino locates and hugs Tsukasa. |
