2023 Chevy Colorado forums

During a recent livestream, the conversation came up about whether there was more or less legroom in the 2023 Chevy Colorado – which was one of the primary complaints in the previous generation.

So, we did a quick on-the-spot comparison, and you know what? The 2023 Colorado has less legroom than the 2022 model. Not by a lot, but it’s still less. In fact, if you look at all the interior specifications, every single dimension is less – other than the front legroom, which gets a 0.2-inch gain.

2023 Colorado legroom & tall guys

One of our viewers is taller than 6 feet and said it was really tight for him. He was hoping against hope this would be one of the key improvements. But alas, it was not.

So, if you had a hard time getting a tall guy in the back seat of the 2022 model, 2023 isn’t going to be any better.

Since the 2023 model only comes in a Crew Cab/Short Bed configuration, those are the numbers from the 2022 model we pulled for the chart below.

2023 Chevy Colorado2022 Chevy Colorado Crew Cab/Short BedThe difference
Headroom (in.): Front 40.3 41.4 1.1
Rear 38.3 38.3 0
Legroom (in.): Front 45.2 45 -0.2
Rear 34.7 35.8 1.1
Shoulder Room (in.): Front 57.4 57.5 0.1
Rear 56.1 56.2 0.1
Hip Room (in.): Front 54.7 55 0.3
Rear 53.1 53.3 0.2

The bottom line

In a world where everything seems to be getting bigger these days, the 2023 Colorado has a shrinking interior. We find this weird because the 2023 model has a 3-inch longer wheelbase, 1 inch of extra length and 1 inch of extra width.

So, where did those extra inches go? This is where we’d insert the Tim Esterdahl chin rub because it certainly wasn’t to interior volume.

Prototypes for the next-generation Chevy Colorado have begun to show some more details, providing our best look yet at the headlights for the base WT trim, and the higher-end LT trim levels.

The old-school halogen lighting is clearly in place on the stripped-down WT trim. We also see the simple 17-inch steel wheels, wearing Goodyear Wrangler HT tires.

We also caught a higher-end spec—likely the LT trim—revealing headlights with an LED signature and what appears to be projector beam bulbs, providing a more modern look. This latest prototype has removed the camouflage mesh around the headlights, revealing the cut lines to giving us a better feel for the shape and placement of the headlights. We can now discern the horizontal orientation of the headlights, and the eyebrow LED feature at the top of the headlamp cluster. We can also see a new lighting element stretching toward the top of the grille. We can now also see the round fog lamps mounted in the front bumper.

Mind you, early mule cars very often have "fake" lighting plugs, since lights are done well after the body and running gear.

Yea very hard to tell much wheel arches on fender the shapes are pressing tight against the covers look pretty good, like the general shape of it looks more of a full-size classic American truck winner look to it look like something that might knock the Tacoma of it's perch, well at least with the cover on. Big shock horror probably will come l suppose when the covers are removed, l expect more of a dull L200 boring shaped loser.

So far so-good fingers crossed, well at least until the cover come off LOL.

I know it is padded and it is very difficult to discern size but it looks bigger than the current Colorado. Unless they have a small truck on the way my personal opinion is they are going the wrong direction with the Colorado (if it is indeed larger).

Nah, it's just the bulky black camo and the things under it they've tacked on to it to make it seem that way and throw people off.

I have liked my 2019 and 2021 Denali Canyons. They have been nice trucks but for the gas mileage you might as well get a 5.3L in a full-size.

The 2.7T or the 6? I assume the 2.7T, it is thirsty in my CT4, though a lot of fun. If I do drive gently in tour mode the gas milage is pretty decent, but what fun is that?

Perhaps they are really that good with the camo but my eyes can’t help to think this is slightly bigger than the current model.

My wife loves her Colorado. She gets great mileage with the V6. I think in the upper 20's - 27 or 28 mpg. She hardly drives anymore though since Covid made her a permanent teleworker.

Maybe I should start driving her truck to work since mine gets crappy mileage - I'm averaging 15-16 mpg or something.

At $5 a gallon of gas I'd say that's a no-brainer! Even at $3 a gallon it still makes a lot of sense - approaching double the mpg's means almost half the gas used. Unless your commute is 1 mile, then not much of a saver.

Wow. The best I ever got was like 22-23 in my 2019 after it had a few miles on it. My current one the best I ever got was a bit over 21.

Heck with the family Yukon I could run 23-24. Like I said don’t buy the small trucks for fuel economy.

So I am comparing the LGZ V6 in my current one… The two 5.3L L83 V8s that we have logged 50,000 miles between two family Yukons in seven years would indicate to me the big lazy V8 in a half-ton BOF full-size SUV or truck slay the V6 MPG wise in the ‘little’ trucks on the highway by 2-3 mpgs.

Holy buckets. That is amazing I wish either of my Canyon Denali’s did that good. I can get 27 or so out of the Acadia and 30 out of the old Bonneville.

Will the new Colorado be 4-cylinder only? Maybe two or three engine choices but only 4 cylinders.

It would be a daring choice but maybe it would have some benefits. I imagine designing an engine compartment that only accepts inline engines is simpler than if that same compartment is to accept both v-engines and inline engines. That would benefit development costs and GM could optimize the vehicle for just one kind of engine, which could potentially save some mass.

From what I gather online it will be 2.7L Turbo 4 cylinder only. I am betting on it getting the non-high output model rated at 310hp / 348lbft for torque. Transmission who knows GM might be tight and do 8 speeds just like they did on the half tons. The 10 speed would be sweet but I wouldn’t count on it.

No LGZ V6, no Duramax (2.8 or 3.0) and certainly no small block.

Remember this is GM we are talking about…

What can I expect from a 2023 Chevy Colorado?

What's New for 2023? The Colorado is all-new for 2023, with a redesigned body, updated powertrain options, and a vastly improved interior. The Colorado will only be sold as a crew cab with a five-foot short bed, but remains available in either rear- or four-wheel-drive configurations.

When can I order a 2023 Chevy Colorado?

According to sources familiar with the matter, order banks for the 2023 Chevy Colorado will open on November 10th, 2022. This includes the 2023 Chevy Colorado WT, LT, Trail Boss, and Z71 trim levels, but not the ZR2, which will go into production at a later date.

What engine will the 2023 Colorado have?

The 2023 Chevy Colorado will receive a new RPO code for its base turbocharged 2.7L I4 engine.
