Sometimes you just want wide. Prime or zoom, good wide or ultra wide angle (UWA) lenses are generally not cheap – at least not one that is any good.

If you want to pinch the pennies and get a cheap UWA, then your sights are going to be looking at third party options over OEM and probably manual focus as well.

Tamron has always done well by me – with every lens I’ve gotten from them well worth more than the price I paid for it.

Wide angle and UWA may not be for everyone. Before plunking down good money for an OEM variant, I experimented with some lower cost alternatives. For Fuji, we had the Samyang 12mm f/2 and Nikon lead us to the 20mm f/3.5 AIS lens.

Both of the above mentioned lenses are great performers and have been reviewed here on this site. Check out the backlog if you are interested in either.

There does come a time after the experimentation phase where you decide, is the wide that 24mm field of view (FOV) something that I would use on the regular?

For us, that question was answered with a yes! Now the looking into the options.

We looked long and hard at the Nikon OEM lenses first, with the 16-35/4G, 18-35/3.5-4.5G in f-mount in consideration along with the z-mount 14-30/4S lens.

Based on some preliminary research, the Nikon 16-35 gets decent marks, but by all accounts in a head to head the Nikon 18-35 is the better optic. The big, and obvious, thing that the 16-35 has going for it is the 16mm.

A big con for me against the 16-35 is its size.

We then look at the z-mount 14-30/4. Cost wise, ti is not all that bad for being newer technology. It also goes to 14mm.

What we eventually decided upon was that the 14-30 just didn’t knock my socks off for the price.

Then we started looking at other options in the AF arena. We threw the Tamron 17-35 into the mix and looked at it against the Nikon 18-35. We opted for the Tamron.

Let’s see if we made a good decision!

Handling/Size/Weight

The Tamron 17-35mm f/2.8-4 Di OSD lens is not a large zoom considering it cover the 135 sensor size (what Nikon calls FX and most other refer to as “full fame”). Accomplished by having that variable aperture.

On the Df or D500 it handles well, and the Z6 has no issues with it either on the FTZ adapter.

There is an AF/MF switch on the lens, a zoom ring and a focus ring. The zoom ring is closest to the camera body and the focus ring is closer to the front element.

One thing to note about the manual focus ring is that it does move when the camera auto focus’. Some people have issue with that, however I do not.

The front of the lens does move out a few millimeters when zooming from 17 to 35…but it is very minute.

Overall the lens if relatively light weight and all the controls you need are right there and in a good place.

Weather Sealed

This is weather sealed lens. I’ve had good fortune with the other weather sealed Tamron lenses and have no concerns about this one.

Image Quality

Right down to it, this lens delivers the goods. Even at f/2.8 the lens is acceptably sharp on all the cameras I’ve tested it on. It does sharpen up more when stopping down a bit.

Unless I need the f/2.8 for low light shooting, I’m usually shooting this lens at f/4 to start out at all focal lengths.

On certain subjects, there is noticeable barrel distortion at 17mm. Shooting it right, you can correct for this in post and straighten the lines out. The image below of the war posters shows some of the wide angle distortion.

As usual, check out the sample images in this review to make the determination for yourself on this lens.

Focusing

This is not a speed demon of a lens when focusing. However, it is fast enough that it was never an issue for us. I usually use this lens for grabbing wide angle landscapes or architecture shots, so having that instant AF is not really necessary. The reason for getting this lens was to have the auto focus for convenience over the manual focus alternatives.

On all cameras tested, the AF was spot on and confident.

VR

No VR in the lens, but used on adapted cameras with IBIS, you do now have the ability to take advantage of it. Even the new Nikon Z mirrorless cameras have in body image stabilization that will work with this lens.

Even on a camera without IBIS, like the Nikon DSLRs that I can use this on hand holding even at slower shutter speeds should not be an issue. It is a lot to do with technique or using a tripod or other stabilization aid.

Bottom Line

For this lens, it comes down to what YOU need. Do you need an affordable wide angle zoom lens that is compact, has a relatively fast aperture range?

We were lucky enough to get a used copy of this lens for around $400. New, this Tamron lens runs about $599.

Recommendation on this lens is high. It is a great alternative option compared to all other similar lenses.
