Best rap playlist ever

Back in the day, the mixtape was the driving force behind hip-hop culture. But these days, fans dont reach for C-90 cassettes when they want to spread the gospel they make playlists.

For evidence, look no further than Rap Caviar. Curated by Tuma Basa, global programming head of hip-hop at Spotify, the Rap Caviar playlist now has in excess of seven million followers, and has been credited with moving artists like Lil Uzi Vert and Rae Sremmurd into the genre's big leagues. More broadly, it's clear there's something about that sense of discovery through curated recommendations that remains vital to the culture. With that in mind weve put together a list of the 10 rap playlists on Spotify that you shouldn't sleep on.

The biggest artists, the hottest beats and the most followers of any hip-hop playlist on Spotify. This is where you come when nothing but the the freshest and finest rap will satisfy.

Expand your horizons. This roundup of global rap cuts includes entries from Morocco, Germany, Brazil and China to name just a few plus some familiar faces from the US and UK.

Hot beats, served ice cold. These instrumentals come from a global roster of beatmakers, offering up a distinctly late-night-into-early-morning vibe thatll have you hooked. Check out the lush, warped sound of Italian producers okho and Saito.

Lets be honest often the internet can be a toxic, negative place, full of people who believe that whoever yells the loudest means their views are the correct ones. Thankfully Boosie Fade is the perfect antidote to these dark online corners, giving likeminded music fans the chance to talk about rap and R&B in a welcoming, friendly environment. Started by Jordan Sowunmi and James Rathbone in 2014 as a Toronto-based party, they created a Facebook group shortly after where members could share new songs, talk about favourite artists, and of course, post memes. Five years later, Boosie Fade includes people from all over the world, and its creators have also launched a podcast (Catch Up) which earlier this month spent time as Canada's number one music podcast. Starting this year, Sowunmi and Rathbone have teamed up to share an exclusive Boosie Fade playlist featuring homegrown Canadian talent and international acts, updated monthly. Expect to hear the freshest tracks from veterans, but also to discover your favourite new artists.

Raps darkside. Spanning decades and diligently compiled over three years, this takes in deeper, darker beats, including classics from Busta Rhymes and Nas to fresh tracks from XXTENTACION, NAV/Metro Boomin and Mura Masa.

Fire from the UK scene. Before grime dominated, the UK repped some of the best hip-hop in the world, and this playlist proves it can still produce the goods, with legends of the game (Roots Manuva, Rodney P) sitting alongside hidden gems and up-and-comers.

Shout out to the haters. Hip-hop has had its fair share of adversarial relationships; this playlist takes those countless bruised egos and focuses them into a stream of furious rhymes, righteous anger and truly inspired disses. Its always entertaining to look back at a weird beef, like the Eminem vs Fred Durst track Girls.

Rúsínan í pylsuendanum! For such a tiny country, Iceland has produced a shocking amount of great music and as this playlist proves, Icelanders are no slouch when it comes to beats and rhymes check out the glacial, trap infused beats of Alvia Islandia.

West Coast represent! Hip-hop might have been born on the East Coast, but it came of age in California. This playlist collates the best of the most recent tracks, from rappers who continue to have the west side on lock.

Break ya neck. Head nodding, foot tapping, steady rockin beats to keep you pushing forward - whether youre pounding the pavement, cruising through the city - or sitting at home in the mood to pump some rap thumpers. Highlights include Camp Los forgotten classic Luchini AKA This is It.
