I. Phân biệt "a number of " & "the number of"

1.1. Nhìn vào công thức có thể thấy rằng the number of sẽ đi với danh từ số nhiều và động từ được chia ở dạng số ít (is/was).

Dưới đây là một số ví dụ cụ thể:

• Today, the number of children is under pressure of stuyding from their parents.
• The number of animals in the zoo is 20.
• The number of students in my class is 45.​

1.2. Ngoài ý nghĩa chỉ số lượng thì “the number of” còn được sử dụng để nói về số lượng có chung tính chất (ở đây nhấn mạnh về mặt tính chất).

• Đặt trong trường hợp này thì động từ đi theo Noun phải được chia ở dạng số nhiều.

IELTS TUTOR xét ví dụ:

• Today, the number of children are taller than in the past.
• The number of trees in this forest are old.​

• The number of thường đứng ở đầu câu hoặc đứng giữa câu sau động từ to be / động từ chính.

• A number of có nghĩa là “một vài”, hay “một vài những”, dùng để diễn tả một số trong tổng thể. 
• Cấu trúc cố định, a number of đi với danh từ số nhiều, động từ chia theo ngôi ba số nhiều.

• A number of = several/some: Một vài, một số những…

• Người dùng hay nhầm lẫn ở dấu hiệu “a”, và dịch nghĩa là “một vài” – chỉ một lượng mà chia động từ ở ngôi ba số ít, hoặc danh từ để dạng số ít dẫn đến những lỗi sai ngữ pháp.

• A number of flowers are decorated for the wedding (ĐÚNG)
• A number of flowers is decorated for the wedding (SAI)

• A number of people are playing to music in this party = Some / Several people are playing to music in this party.

• A number of thường đứng ở đầu câu hoặc giữa câu sau động từ to be / động từ thường.

• Danh từ theo sau the number of và a number of đều là danh từ đếm được số nhiều và không theo sau bởi danh từ không đếm được (uncountable nouns: water, news, furniture,…).

Hai dạng danh từ đếm được số nhiều cần lưu ý:

• Danh từ số nhiều có quy tắc: days, books, streets,…
• Danh từ số nhiều bất quy tắc: man ~ men, woman ~ women, foot ~ feet, sheep ~ sheep, deer ~ deer, tooth ~ teeth, mouse ~ mice, child ~ children, person ~ people, knife ~ knive, wife ~ wives, wolf ~ wolves, leaf ~ leaves, và các từ thêm "es"  
• Một số danh từ có cấu tạo kết thúc bằng “s”, tuy nhiên không phải dạng số nhiều, người dùng cần lưu ý để phân biệt như: mathematics, politics, physics…(các môn học), news, …

II. Cách dùng "QUANTITY OF"

A QUANTITY OF + DANH TỪ ĐẾM ĐƯỢC VÀ KHÔNG ĐẾM ĐƯỢC

• Động từ theo sau sẽ chia theo NOUN, nếu là danh từ đếm được thì động từ chia số nhiều, danh từ không đếm được thì động từ chia số ít

• You only need a very small quantity of cement to mix with the sand.

III. Cách dùng "AMOUNT OF"

• Cụm từ “amount of” được sử dụng cho những danh từ không đếm được và danh từ số ít.
