Buried in the press release for the redesigned 2022 Range Rover, Land Rover briefly mentioned the all-electric Range Rover. It stated, “Spearheading the Land Rover brand’s Reimagine strategy, a pure-electric model will join the family in 2024, bringing full-time zero tailpipe emissions driving to the Range Rover for the first time.”

It’s not clear whether 2024 refers to the 2024 model year or a release date in the year 2024. If Land Rover plans on releasing the Range Rover Electric for the 2024 model year, it may be available as early as fall 2023.

Land Rover didn’t provide any further information about the Range Rover Electric. Considering that some of its luxury SUV competitors, such as BMW with the 2022 iX, already released electric SUVs, Land Rover is rather late to the party on the EV front. Let’s hope the wait will be worth it.

When will the Range Rover plug-in hybrid (PHEV) be released?

Land Rover stated that the Range Rover plug-in hybrid (PHEV) will be released for the 2023 model year. This could mean that the release date of the Range Rover plug-in hybrid is as early as fall 2022.

Land Rover provided much more information about the Range Rover plug-in hybrid than the Range Rover Electric. The automaker already has experience with mild-hybrid powertrains for the Range Rover, so it undoubtedly builds upon this technology for the Range Rover plug-in hybrid.

The powertrain of the Range Rover PHEV consists of an inline six-cylinder Ingenium engine, a 105 kW electric motor, and a 38.2 kWh lithium-ion battery. It generates a total system output of 434 hp. With its innovative 48-volt mild-hybrid technology and belt-integrated starter motor, the Ingenium engine is very responsive. Also, the belt-integrated starter motor provides additional assistance when the Range Rover PHEV accelerates.

The electric motor isn’t just for efficiency and eco-friendly credentials. It enables the Range Rover PHEV to reach up to 87 mph without the need to use the gas engine. Also, the Range Rover plug-in hybrid offers an electric-only range of 62 miles. As a result, most drivers of the Range Rover PHEV can drive on purely electric power most of the time.

To help maximize the use of energy and extend the electric range of the battery, the Range Rover PHEV features eHorizon navigation data. Also, with the battery situated underneath the vehicle, the Range Rover PHEV maximizes luggage space without sacrificing off-road capabilities.

With the upcoming release of the Range Rover Electric and PHEV models, Land Rover finally rides the electrified wave. Details are still sparse about these models, so stay tuned for more information.
