The Germany international has been RB Leipzig's top scorer for the past three seasons

'I'm glad that I signed with RB Leipzig and thus extended my contract,' said Werner in a statement.

'Of course, this process has been going on for a very long time, but I really wanted to be completely sure that I could take the next steps in the development of this club.

'And for the right reasons you just need a little longer. Now I can fully concentrate on playing with our team as successful season as possible.'

Werner has been the club's highest scorer for the past three seasons, getting 21 in 2016-17, 14 in 2017-18, and 16 in 2018-19.

Werner emerged as a target for both Liverpool and Bayern Munich during the summer

'We are glad that the negotiations with Timo Werner have now come to a positive conclusion and he has decided to extend the contract with us,' said RB Leipzig managing director Oliver Minstzlaff.

We have had many intensive discussions over a long period of time and have been very attentive to and valued by Timo. We are glad that we now have clarity and are pleased that Timo remains an important part of our team.'

He had come under the watchful eye of Bayern Munich during the summer, but they never made a formal offer for his services, which would've had to be £50million to reach Leipzig's valuation.

Liverpool were also in the running to sign Werner after Bayern cooled their interest, but a deal never went through.

'Of course, we are pleased that Timo Werner has decided to extend his contract with us and to continue the path we have taken with our club,' said sport director Markus Krosche.

'This is a very positive signal and also underscores our goal of tying our core employees to us in the long term and of permanently establishing ourselves in the Bundesliga. Of course, that was a far-reaching decision for his own future, and for that reason, he took the necessary time for it, which we also gave him.'

The 23-year-old expressed his joy at the signing of his new deal.

"I am delight to have signed with RB Leipzig and extending my current contract," he stated.

"Of course, this process has taken a long time, but I really wanted to be completely sure that I could take my next steps in the development of this club.
