Microsoft introduced a completely redesigned user interface called Metro with the release of Windows 8, but it didn't make it easy to turn it off if you or your employees prefer desktop-based, point-and-click computing. While the desktop is accessible once your computer starts, you'll need to utilize the task scheduler if you want your computer to boot to desktop by default. With just a few simple steps, you can banish the nuisance caused by Metro while continuing to enjoy the modern software and improved performance offered by Windows 8.

1

Press the "Windows" key and type "Schedule Tasks"; then press "Enter."

2

Click "Create a Task" in the "Actions" sidebar.

3

Type "Show Desktop" in the "Name" text box, and select "Windows 8" from the "Configure for" drop-down menu.

4

Select the "Triggers" tab and click the "New" button.

5

Select "At log on" from the "Begin the task" drop-down menu, and click "OK."

6

Select the "Actions" tab and click "New."

7

Type "C:\Windows\explorer.exe" in the "Program/Script" text box and then click "OK."

8

Select the "Conditions" tab and uncheck "Start the task only if the computer is on AC power," then click "OK."

9

Restart the computer to test that it boots to the desktop by default. A Windows Explorer window will open automatically and your computer will start in desktop mode.

Warnings

  • Information in this article applies to Windows 8. It may vary slightly or significantly with other versions or products.
  • Default Windows applications like Calendar, Messaging, Mail and Store require the use of the Metro interface to operate. Using these applications will cause Windows to exit desktop mode.
