Mustang discontinued 2023

Consumers that are thinking about purchasing a 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E are in for a surprise when they visit Ford’s website. The 2023 Mach-E configurator only has three available trims for shoppers to explore, as the base Select trim is missing. As Teslarati reports, Ford has removed the Select trim from the Mach-E’s configurator because of high demand for the trim.

Just before Ford removed the Select trim from the configurator, we saw that Ford’s website was showing a wait time of up to 34 weeks for new orders for the Select trim. That’s the longest wait time we’ve seen for the Mach-E and is an extra four weeks compared to the Premium trim, which has the longest current wait time of any Mach-E that can be configured on Ford’s website with an estimate between 18 to 30 weeks. So, Ford clearly had a lot of demand for the entry-level Select trim.

A Ford spokesperson told Teslarati that the automaker was hitting the pause button on orders for the Mach-E Select trim because of unexpected demand for the model. “Since the order bank re-opened, customer demand for Mustang Mach-E has exceeded projections for some models," said the spokesperson. "For Mustang Mach-E Select, we have already increased production well above original projections. To further help manage supply constraints and provide more predictable order-to-delivery times for all of our customers, we are pausing retail orders on the Select model. Customers with existing Select orders are unaffected by this model pause.”

We’re sure Ford will allow customers to order a Select trim in the future, but for the time being, this is a large drawback for shoppers because it makes the Mach-E a lot more expensive. The 2023 Mach-E Select starts at $48,195 (including destination), while the Premium trim is priced at $56,275. Since Ford has stopped accepting orders for the Select trim, customers are looking at paying an extra $8,080 to get a 2023 Mach-E now. And even then, wait times are incredibly long for the Premium trim.

Long wait times have become the norm for the Mach-E. Ever since Ford launched the vehicle, it’s been having trouble keeping up with demand for the electric SUV. The COVID-19 pandemic, semiconductor shortage, supply chain issues, and inflation haven’t helped the automaker get on top of the issue. In June 2021, wait times for the Mach-E reached up to 28 weeks. Earlier this April, consumers putting in a new order for a Mach-E were looking at waiting 32 weeks or more for their new SUV. Wait times for 2023 Mach-E hit 24 weeks in September, so it looks like the 2023 model will follow a similar ebb and flow as the 2022 model.

While this is more bad news for consumers, it’s good news for Ford, as it proves that the automaker has a vehicle that’s still in high demand. Despite the large $8,300 increase in pricing for the 2023 model year and extensive wait times, the Mach-E remains one of the more sought-after EVs.
