I'm 23 but the sad fact is that I still break out regularly. Sometimes it's before my period, often because I am trying out a new product for a review. I've heard from countless magazines that Mario Badescu is good for acne-ridden skin but thought that it's too expensive for me - wrong! It's quite affordable so I decided to buy the Mario Badescu Drying Cream (P795) when I was at Rustan's some weeks ago.

The Drying Cream promises to "heal and conceal under surface blemishes". I was a bit baffled about what the copy meant when it said surface blemishes, but I suppose it means pimples. The cream does heal pimples (albeit slowly), but I wouldn't recommend that it be used as a concealer since it's too white!

What I love about the product

  • As promised, it dries pimples. I give it two to three nights, depending on the pimple's severity. Really bad pimples won't get worse if you use this cream.
  • Great for pimple poppers (I'm guilty!). It covers up the wound, dries it, and sanitizes the area without stinging.

  • There's a huuuge amount of product in the jar (14ml). Considering that this is only for spot treatments, one jar can last at least six months up to a year, depending on usage.
  • Price is right. It's only P200 more expensive here than the US price ($14).

What I don't like about the product

  • Has a strong Dr Kauffman sulfur soap smell.
  • I really wish that this would dry once applied. Instead, it just sits on my skin until most of it gets wiped off. You can't use this during the day if you're going out - you'll look ridiculous, don't even think about wearing it under makeup. If you use it at night, most of it will be gone by morning.

Recommendations

I've used this product several times and I can vouch for its efficacy. However, if you want quicker results, you can give this product a miss.

The Drying Cream is for ladies (and men) who need something to stop their pimples from getting worse or at least cover up popped pimples. Apply a thick layer on the afflicted area and wait for the magic to happen.

Verdict

I am torn about this product. It's ok, but it could be better. I heard that the Mario Badescu Drying Lotion is more effective and fast-acting, so I'll probably try that one next. In the meantime I don't mind using the Drying Cream to heal my skin.

This is an epic product. My entire life I’ve heard that it worked wonders. As a young teen, I saw it advertised in the back of zillions of fashion mags. Even as a young teen, I had my doubts. Nothing could “shrink” zits. Right? Well, as an adult I’m finally using this product after hearing tons of beauty bloggers and beauty editors rave about this “magic” pink brew.

Mario Badescu looks and smells like a witches brew. It is a “gross” mix of ingredients: a alcohol, calamine, camphor, colloidal sulfur, salicylic acid, and a few other things. The “pink” stays on the bottom and the “oil” rests on top. This product isn’t visually or olfactory pleasing. The smell is really gross. It’s nose hair singing alcohol and camphor. The dry-down is sulfur. A product this gross could only be around so long only if it worked, right? Well, maybe the answer is yes, because this product has a cult following.

I have normal skin. It is usually happy. My skin rarely breakouts. I’m not bragging. I’m telling the truth. When my skin does breakout, I feel it is something that I couldn’t have predicted or prevented. However, I do get blemishes and they piss me off. Mario Badescu Drying Lotion does nothing for “those” blemishes, you know, the ones that are just unproductive and “there until they want to leave” blemishes. However, Mario Badescu Drying Lotion has worked wonders on ingrown hairs. My heritage makes me hairy; I apologist for the TMI. I wax and tweeze frequently. And this pisses my skin off. I’m too familiar with ingrowns. MB Drying Lotion helps with that. I believe it’s the salicylic acid that helps me. The company Mario Badescu recommend this product for whiteheads, I rarely get those. I’m not the “ideal” person for this product.

This formula other than smelling gross, looks gross. I dip a cotton swab in the mix. Resist the urge to shake the mixture! I apply the pink lotion to my blemishes. This, of course, is less than sexy. I don’t care what you choose to wear in your boudoir; you are going to look quite silly with pink dots on your problem areas!

I like Mario Badescu Drying Lotion. I don’t use it very often since it drys my skin out big time. I only use it on spots that I know can be sped up by this stinky wonder lotion such as white heads and ingrown hairs. I do not use it on those small, “gonna budge when I want to” blemishes. MB Drying Lotion does nothing for them. I had <meh> results using this product but I know other people that love it. It seems to work for them. If you have used this product before, what do you think?

A 1 oz. bottle retails for $17 at Mario Badescu Skin Care. Being a spot treatment, you don’t use too much of it.

What are the cons of Mario Badescu Drying Lotion?

Changes that could have you clear for good without the need for drying spot treatments. Wahoo. The number one reason why I hate Mario Badescu Drying Lotion (and let me be clear, I don't hate all Mario Badescu products) is because it has a super high alcohol content.

What does the Mario Badescu drying cream do?

What it is. Mario Badescu Drying Cream clarifies and targets surface bumps, blemishes and spots with clarifying and oil-absorbing Sulfur and Zinc Oxide. Sulfur and Zinc Oxide clarifies skin, draws out pore-clogging impurities and helps absorb excess oil.

Can I use Mario Badescu Drying Lotion everyday?

A: The Drying Lotion should be used nightly for the duration of the blemish. The spot treatment is very noticeable on the skin. We do not recommend using the product during the day.

How long does it take for Mario Badescu Drying Lotion to settle?

-No matter how tempted you are, don't shake the bottle! If you do, simply set the bottle on an even, flat surface. Leave it undisturbed for a few hours and voilà: Your Drying Lotion is settled and looking brand new.
