havent tried this yet, but seems viable - found on other forum. (little freaked out to screw with my systems reg)

ok this is a simple fix and i stumbled upon it while searching other forums for a os page pool memory problem. BE WARNED THIS SOLUTION, IF NOT DONE CORRECTLY MAY BE HARMFUL TO YOUR COMPUTER. Heres the solution: Start Menu > Run > regedit

Surf down to this key. The REG_DWORD "PagedPoolSize" Code:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Memory Management

Double click on "PagedPoolSize". Hexadecimal is listed first. Change the "Value Data" to one of these below: Note: You only need to enter EITHER Hexadecimal or Decimal. They both are the same. I recomend using 256Mb should solve the problem. Code:

Megabytes Hexadecimal Decimal 192Mb 0c000000 201326592 256Mb 10000000 268435456 384Mb 18000000 402653184

You do not need anything bigger than 400Mb... in most cases 300Mb is too much as well.

Once you are done, make sure you reboot your computer.

GOOD LUCK! HAVE FUN!

if someone wants to try it and get back i'm all ears

re: Failed to Lock Vertex Buffer

I actually tried the above method and it worked perfectly for me. I used the 256 one and it worked fine. I havent had an error since.

I can confirm that this fixes the infamous "failed to lock vertex buffer in CmeshDX8" crash/error in Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines (I used 256Mb 10000000)

Well done. If you use this, remember to restart first!

re: Failed to Lock Vertex Buffer

i had the same problem with my dual x1950 pro cards. i went to steam and looked it up, its a problem with the page file being used up by virus protection, exit virus protection or un-install it all together.

This worked for me too. Thanks to the people who posted it.

If anyone can explain to me how it works or what I've done to my computer by making this change to the system register, I'd be very grateful.

In the meantime, I'm just glad that my game is running without problems.

re: Failed to Lock Vertex Buffer

I have three different computers running varying degrees of hardware. needless to say i only ever have trouble with my ATI card. I talked with a support guy through Valve and he was telling me that the way ATI designs their Hardware and Software means that Valve has to redo the operation of the Computer. I've found this to mean ATI and HL2 engine do not mix. I know this isn't much help, but if you can return the card and trade it out for a nvidia.
