If the message recommends a solution, such as redownloading the installer and trying again, please try that first. If the message says that your Mac doesn't have enough storage space, find out how to free up storage space. The other solutions, starting with the easiest, are listed here.

Even if you're not installing macOS from the internet, the installer needs the internet to get firmware and other information specific to your Mac. Make sure that your Mac has a working and stable internet connection.

Install while your Mac has started up in safe mode. To start up in safe mode, determine whether you're using a Mac with Apple silicon, then follow the appropriate steps:

  1. Shut down your Mac.
  2. Turn on your Mac and continue to press and hold the power button until you see the startup options window.
  3. Select your startup disk, then press and hold the Shift key while clicking "Continue in Safe Mode".
  4. Log in to your Mac. You may be asked to log in again.

If you're asked to select a user you know the password for, select the user, click Next, then enter their administrator password. Service and parts may be obtained for longer, as required by law or for up to 7 years* , subject to parts availability. Additionally, Mac laptops may be eligible for an extended battery-only repair period for up to 10 years from when the product was last distributed for sale, subject to parts availability.

Apple discontinues hardware service for certain technologically-obsolete products. Your product is supported by ongoing OS updates and backed by a network of more than 5,000 Apple-certified repair locations that you can count on if something unexpected happens.
