Laptops trade a lot of performance for mobility, and thats why the battery is one of the essential parts of every laptop. Now, besides the obvious limitations in Li-Ion battery durability, there are a plethora of issues that concern battery usage. One of those concerns is the stoppage of charging process, where computer charges and then just stop charging for no obvious reason.

In order to address this, we conducted an in-depth research to provide you with the most viable solutions for this peculiar, but nonetheless, a reoccurring problem that plagues many users. If your laptop charges and then suddenly stops charging even though the battery is far away from 100%, make sure to check out the solutions presented below.

Laptop battery charges for a few seconds and then stops? Fix it in 4 steps

  1. Check jack, adapter, and battery
  2. Uninstall driver
  3. Discharge the battery
  4. Update BIOS

Solution 1: Check jack, adapter, and battery

Whenever you bump into a problem like this, its always suggested to check the hardware before we can move to the software-related troubleshooting. Namely, the most common reasons for inconsistent charging are:

  • The jack is damaged or completely broken. Most of the times on the joint.

  • The adapter is scorched.
  • If the battery isnt placed properly or its dying, it wont recharge.
  • The motherboard port intended for chargingis damaged.

  • The adapters cable is torn.
  • Youre using a charger thats not supported.

So, make sure to inspect everything thoroughly. For the better insight in battery healthstatus, you can download a third-party tool calledBatteryInfo Viewand take an in-depth status readings. Battery-wise, in our experience, if youre laptop battery unit is older than 2 years, chances are that its dying out on you and you should replace it. The warranty limit is somewhere around 300 charge cycles or 18 months of use.

On the other hand, if youve lately acquired laptop and/or can confirm that everything is as it should be in regards to jack, adapter, motherboard, or battery, then we can move to additional steps.

Solution 2: Reinstall a driver

It seems that theres rarely any problem that, in some manner, doesnt include drivers. In this case, the Microsoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery driver is what mightve been causing the charging stoppage. This device is there to control the battery usage and provide real-time readings of battery behavior in the Windows shell. However, there are two reasons why it might not work as expected:

  • It collides with OEMs battery-related controllers. Many of them dont have Windows 10 support.
  • Its malfunctioning on its own.

Both scenarios mean the same thing: youll need to get rid of it. However, its not that simple. Theres a whole sequence youll need to comply with in order to fix this problem. Heres how to do it:

  1. Disconnect charger and shut down your computer.
  2. Remove the battery and re-connect the charger.
  3. Power On your PC.
  4. Right-click on the Start button and open Device Manager.
  5. Expand the Batteries section.
  6. Right-click on theMicrosoft ACPI Compliant Control Method Battery device and Uninstall it.

In addition, you can remove the battery-related software provided by OEM. For example, Samsung has a tool called Battery Life Extender that will limit the charging percentage to 80% in order to extend the battery life.

This might trick you into thinking that something is wrong. Others might provide you with wrong readings (saying that battery isnt charging even though it does), so its worth a try to remove everything and rely on system resources rather than on third-party tools.

Solution 3: Discharge the battery

The standard Lithium-Ion battery ispredetermined to last up to 300 full recharge cycles. Meaning that it takes 300 full recharges to wear it off. Now, users are rarely going to fully discharge the battery and charge it again to 100% or regular basis, even though its, arguably, the best way to extend your batterys life.

In addition, the constant half cycles can cause a stir in the supporting software and prevent your battery from charging. In other words, discharging has multiple roles, and it might help you resolve the issue at hand.

Follow the instructions below to fully discharge your battery and, hopefully, resolve the issue at hand:

  1. Charge your battery as much as you can and disconnect the DC charger.
  2. Use the computer until the battery is fully depleted.
  3. Once the laptop shuts down, dontremove the battery.
  4. Press and hold the power button for approximately 60 seconds.
  5. Insert the battery again and reconnect the DC charger.
  6. Dont turn On the laptop until the battery is charged completely.

If the problem persists and the charging sequence still halts, theres still one thing you can do before turning to a professional help.

Solution 4: Update BIOS

Finally, theres a well-known issue with some Toshiba laptops that have had similar symptoms. Users managed to resolve it by updating BIOS. Namely, it seems that the outdated BIOS version can cause the battery performance and system readings malfunction. And that, seemingly, include the stoppage in the charging sequence. So, in order to address this, youll need to update your motherboards firmware and start from there.
