Disney removes Star Wars: Rogue Squadron from release schedule

Disney has officially taken Star Wars: Rogue Squadron off its release schedule, initially slated for a December 22, 2023 release.

The film was pulled from the production schedule in 2021, reportedly due to a scheduling conflict with director Patty Jenkins. The new Star Wars movie was first announced in 2020 via a short video posted to Jenkins' official Twitter account. In the announcement, Jenkins discussed the Air Force and her desire to create the "greatest fighter pilot movie ever."

"The story will introduce a new generation of starfighter pilots as they earn their wings and risk their lives in a boundary-pushing, high-speed thrill-ride, and move the saga into the future era of the galaxy," the official synopsis read. The title of the film took its name from a series of popular Star Wars novels, comics, and video games that saw Rebel pilots fighting back against the Empire.

Lucasfilm president Kathleen Kennedy told Vanity Fair back in May that the film had been "pushed off to the side" while Jenkins develops the script further. Kennedy also said that Taika Waititi's Star Wars movie would probably come out first, as it fits more into the "Star Wars roadmap."

There haven't been many details in regards to Waititi's movie, though the filmmaker said in an interview with Total Film that he "would like to take something new and create some new characters and just expand the world."

Though Jenkins' film has been taken off the schedule, we hope it hasn't been canceled completely.

Star Wars: Rogue Squadron has been removed from Disney’s release calendar.

The upcoming Star Wars spin-off from director Patty Jenkins was scheduled for release on December 22, 2023, but has since been pulled. it was also removed from the studio’s production schedule back in 2021.

Although it may be disappointing news for Star Wars fans, the move was expected. After all, the film should have entered production by now in order to meet its December 2023 release date.

However, this isn’t the first time Rogue Squadron has been delayed after it was bumped from its original November 2023 release date due to scheduling conflicts with Jenkins.

Since the film is still not in production yet, that’s also not necessarily a bad thing… and it doesn’t mean that the film has been canceled. It’s just a lot further out than we originally thought.

Additionally, Disney has shuffled around some of its other release dates: Haunted Mansion will be released on August 11, 2023, with the Untitled Disney Live Action film that previously occupied this slot now removed from the schedule. Next Goal Wins will now be released on April 21, 2023.

Wish, the upcoming Disney film about the iconic star, is one of the previously untitled films, releasing on November 22, 2023. An Untitled Marvel film is now releasing on September 6, 2024, moving from its previous date of February 16, 2024.

Several other previously untitled Disney films include Elio with a new release date of March 1, 2024, Disney’s Snow White with a release date of March 22, 2024, Inside Out 2 with a release date of June 14, 2024, and Mufasa: The Lion King with a release date of July 5, 2024.

Ranking the Star Wars Movies From Worst to Best

As for Star Wars: Rogue Squadron, details are still scarce… and it’ll be even longer before we get a glimpse of the upcoming film.

It’s thought that Rogue Squadron will in some way adapt the iconic Star Wars: Rogue Squadron video game… or at least use the premise as a jumping-off point.

Back when Jenkins was first announced to direct the spin-off, she revealed that her father was a former US Navy pilot, and felt that she was destined to “one day making the greatest fighter pilot movie of all time.”
