One word has only one stress.(One word cannot have two stresses. If you hear two stresses, you hear two words. Two stresses cannot be one word. It is true that there can be a “secondary” stress in some words. But a secondary stress is much smaller than the main [primary] stress, and is only used in long words.)
Mỗi từ chỉ có một trọng âm duy nhất.( Một từ không thể nào có hai trọng âm.Nếu bạn nghe thấy 2 trọng âm có nghĩa là bạn nghe thấy 2 từ. Thật vậy,cho dù có thể tồn tại trọng âm “thứ 2” trong một từ tuy nhiên trọng âm thứ 2
này vẫn nhỏ hơn trọng âm chính và thường chỉ xuất hiện trong những từ dài.) - We can only stress vowels, not consonants.
Chỉ nhấn trọng âm vào nguyên âm, không bao giờ nhấn vào phụ âm.
Here are some more, rather complicated, rules that can help you understand where to put the stress. But do not rely on them too much, because there are many exceptions. It is better to try to “feel” the music of the language and to add the stress
naturally. Dưới đây là một vài quy tắc khác , phức tạp hơn , có thể giúp bạn biết được cần nhấn trọng âm vào đâu. Tuy nhiên đừng quá dựa vào những quy tắc này vì trong tiếng anh có rất nhiều ngoại lệ. Bạn nên cố gắng “cảm nhận” nhạc của ngôn ngữ và thêm trọng âm một cách tự nhiên. 1 Stress on first syllable / Trọng âm ở âm đầu tiên
Rule / Quy tắc
| Example / Ví dụ
| Most 2-syllable nouns / Hầu hết các danh từ có 2 âm tiết
| PRESent, EXport, CHIna, TAble
| Most 2-syllable adjectives / Hầu hết các tính từ có 2 âm tiết
| PRESent, SLENder, CLEVer, HAPpy
|
2 Stress on last syllable / Trọng âm ở âm cuối
Rule / Quy tắc
| Example / Ví dụ
| Most 2-syllable verbs / Hầu hết các động từ có 2 âm tiết
| to preSENT, to exPORT, to deCIDE, to beGIN
|
There are many two-syllable words in English whose meaning and class change with a change in stress. The word present, for example is a two-syllable word. If we stress the first syllable, it is a noun (gift) or an adjective (opposite of absent). But if we stress the second syllable, it becomes a verb (to offer). More examples: the words export, import, contract and object can all be nouns or verbs
depending on whether the stress is on the first or second syllable.
3 Stress on penultimate syllable (penultimate = second from end) / Trọng âm rơi vào âm gần cuối
Rule / Quy tắc
| Example / Ví dụ
| Words ending in -ic / Các từ kết thúc bằng -ic
| GRAPHic, geoGRAPHic, geoLOGic
| Words ending in -sion and -tion / Các từ kết thúc bằng -sion và -tion
| teleVIsion, reveLAtion
|
For a few words, native English speakers don’t always “agree” on where to put the stress. For example, some people say teleVIsion and others say TELevision. Another example is: CONtroversy and conTROversy. Với một vài từ , những người nói tiếng anh bản địa không phải lúc nào cũng “thống nhất” với vị trí đánh trọng âm. Ví như ,một vài người nói teleVIsion, người khác lại nói TELevision.
CONtroversy và conTRoversy cũng vậy. 4 Stress on ante-penultimate syllable (ante-penultimate = third from end) / Trọng âm rơi vào âm thứ 3 từ cuối
Rule / Quy tắc
| Example / Ví dụ
| Words ending in -cy, -ty, -phy and -gy / Những từ tận cùng bằng -cy, -ty, -phy và -gy
| deMOcracy, dependaBIlity, phoTOgraphy, geOLogy
| Words ending in -al /
| CRItical, geoLOGical
|
5 Compound words (words with two parts) / Vấn đề trọng âm trong từ ghép
Rule / Quy tắc
| Example / Ví dụ
| For compound nouns, the stress is on the first part / Với danh từ ghép trọng âm rơi vào âm đầu
| BLACKbird, GREENhouse
| For compound adjectives, the stress is on the second part / Với tính từ ghép trọng âm rơi vào âm thứ hai
| bad-TEMpered, old-FASHioned
| For compound verbs, the stress is on the second part / Với động từ ghép trọng âm rơi vào âm thứ hai
| to underSTAND, to overFLOW
| |
