The second-generation 2023 Volkswagen Amarok ute has been unveiled, ahead of first Australian showroom arrivals early next year, with more technology, performance, efficiency and space than before.

Twinned with the latest Ford Ranger, alongside which it was conceived and developed, the new Volkswagen Amarok offers a bold new look, a more luxurious interior, advanced safety technology for the first time, and a new range of four-cylinder and V6 diesel and petrol engines from Ford.

First Australian showroom arrivals are due to commence in January or February next year, available solely in a four-door dual-cab body style, with a choice of 2.0-litre diesel four-cylinder, 2.3-litre petrol four-cylinder and 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel engines, offering up to 184kW/600Nm with diesel, or 222kW/452Nm with petrol.

In overseas markets, five different specifications are available: standard, Life, Style and two flagship variants, the on-road Aventura (pictured in blue) and off-road Panamericana (pictured in brown) – both of which are expected to be offered in Australia.

Flagship versions are equipped with two large interior screens, the latest in comfort and convenience features, and a full suite of advanced safety aids, all shared with its Ford twin.

The usual Amarok hallmarks remain, including a tray large enough for a Euro pallet mounted sideways, full-time all-wheel drive, and a potent diesel V6 – now a Ford unit – with a 10-speed automatic transmission, now offering low range.

While they won't be confirmed until later in 2022, prices are expected to rise to account for the increased space, tech and performance on offer. The current Amarok costs $45,890 plus on-road costs for an entry-level manual model, rising to $73,990 for the high-spec V6 Aventura.

Here is everything you need to know about the 2023 Volkswagen Amarok range.

2023 Volkswagen Amarok vs Ford Ranger differences

As reported, the new Volkswagen Amarok is twinned under the skin with the new Ford Ranger, with the two utes conceived and developed together as part of a "Global Alliance" engineering program occurring across Australia, Germany and the United States.

But whereas other ute twins like the Isuzu D-Max and Mazda BT-50 share most components, there's more differentiation between the Volkswagen Amarok – across its exterior, interior, and the tuning of its drive systems.

Various elements within the Amarok's exterior are common with the Ranger, including the windscreen, roof, side and rear windows, door handles and mirror housings – as well as the structural 'hard points' underneath its steel body, which define its proportions.

The remainder of the exterior, including the design of the bonnet, fenders and outer door skins – which look similar to those of the Ranger, but Volkswagen says are new – is unique to the Amarok.

2023 Volkswagen Amarok styling and tray

As hinted in design sketches previously issued by Volkswagen, the 2023 Volkswagen Amarok takes on a distinctly more modern appearance, with a higher-set front end featuring angular LED headlamps, optional with Volkswagen’s IQ Light functionality and matrix technology.

They house new-look daytime-running lights, and sit beside a slimline grille, and a so-called 'X-design' front bumper graphic. The C-shaped tail-lights, 'AMAROK' tailgate stamping and alloy wheel designs are other VW-specific highlights of the design.

“For the new generation we have significantly modified the Amarok’s design, It is now more expressive,” says Albert Kirzinger, head of design at Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles in Hanover, Germany.

Along the sides, the new Amarok receives larger wheelhouses front and rear. An increase in capacity now allows the roof rack to accommodate loads of up to 350kg – a significant 150kg more than before.

Volkswagen has also provided the Amarok with a more prominent 'sail plane' on Aventura versions (pictured in blue), which serves to visually lengthen the cabin, and give the new model an added dash of style.

The tray offers an increased payload of up to 1.16 tonnes. It can be secured with a power-operated roller shutter similar to that of the new Ford Ranger Wildtrak, operated either from the cargo box itself, inside, or by remote means via the key fob.

A hard tonneau cover for the cargo box is also planned to be offered in certain markets.

As with the original Volkswagen Amarok, the tray in the new model can accommodate a Euro pallet loaded sideways between the rear wheel arches – made possible after Ford increased the width between the wheelhouses for the new Ranger.

Among a long list of options is a newly-developed bike holder, and what Volkswagen describes as a multi-function carrier system for the cargo box. The tailgate now features the Amarok name stamped into the metal.

2023 Volkswagen Amarok dimensions and wheels

The new Volkswagen Amarok dual cab is 96mm longer than before, at 5350mm in double-cab form, though the width has decreased by 34mm to 1910mm. Depending on the wheel and tyre combination, the height is increased by 10mm to 1888mm.

It is the wheelbase which has undergone the biggest change, though, growing by 173mm to 3270mm – matching its Ford Ranger twin.

By comparison, the Toyota HiLux runs to a length of 5330mm, a width of 1855mm and a height of 1815mm, and has a 3085mm wheelbase. The new dual-cab Ford Ranger Wildtrak measures 5370mm long, 1918mm wide and 1884mm tall.

Volkswagen has also confirmed a two-door single-cab workhorse model will go on sale overseas next year, to challenge established rivals such as the Toyota HiLux, Isuzu D-Max and its Ford Ranger twin – but it has been ruled out for Australia.

With shorter overhangs, Volkswagen says the new dual-cab Amarok is better suited to off-road driving than its predecessor, with approach and departure angles of 29 and 21 degrees respectively, as well as a ramp-over angle of 21 degrees.

Launch models overseas are planned to receive 18-inch wheels as standard, though buyers will be able to option wheels up to 21 inches in diameter (pictured on the blue model). All-terrain tyres are optional in Europe.

Further options include a factory-fit bull bar, underbody protection elements, eye rings for towing and a snorkel attached to the A-pillar.

2023 Volkswagen Amarok interior and safety technology

Inside, the new Volkswagen Amarok shares elements of its dashboard fascia, infotainment display (measuring 10.1 inches as standard, or 12 inches on upper-end models), 8.0- or 12-inch instrument clusters, and various controls with the Ranger.

However, Volkswagen has made a concerted effort to differentiate the Amarok, with features such as a unique leather-bound multi-function steering wheel akin to VW passenger cars, unique digital instrument graphics, centre console switches and gear lever, as well as different materials to those used by the Ford.

The new model receives its own leather and cloth seats to give the Amarok what design boss Kirzinger describes “typical Volkswagen properties”. Both the Aventura and Panamericana variants receive front seats with 10-way electric adjustment, as well as an eight-speaker Harmon Kardon sound system.

The infotainment screen runs the same Ford Sync 4 operating system as the Ranger, but has been reskinned with Volkswagen-specific graphics akin to a new VW Golf hatchback. The manual handbrake of the old model is replaced by a new electric parking brake switch.

Volkswagen claims up to 20 different storage compartments throughout the cabin, including pockets within the doors capable of holding 1.5-litre bottles.

Available features in Europe include a wireless phone charger, leather upholstery, keyless (proximity) entry, push-button start faux leather dashboard trim, ambient interior and cargo box (tray) lighting, auto wipers, dual-zone climate control, and a household power socket inside the cabin.

Where the new VW Amarok makes one of its biggest leaps is in safety, gaining a full suite of advanced driver assistance features not available on the current model – as well as, most likely, a full gamut of airbags for front and rear occupants.

Available active safety features include autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, traffic sign recognition, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane assist systems capable of centring the vehicle within its lane on freeways.

There are also front and rear parking sensors and a 360-degree camera, plus semi-automatic parking on versions with automatic transmissions. All of these safety systems are shared with the Ford Ranger.

For comparison, the current VW Amarok does not offer any advanced safety technology, nor rear airbags, push-button start, a digital instrument cluster, or a range of other features on the new model.

2023 Volkswagen Amarok engines

Under the bonnet, the new Amarok will be available with three Ford engine types in seven different power outputs – some of which aren't offered in the equivalent Ranger – coupled with five- and six-speed manual, or six- and 10-speed automatic transmissions.

Australia will receive four powertrain choices: two versions of a 2.0-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder, plus a 3.0-litre diesel V6 and, in a surprise move, a 2.3-litre turbo-petrol four-cylinder.

Headlining the Australian range will be a 3.0-litre single-turbo diesel V6 (TDV6), developing 184kW and 600Nm – replacing the outgoing VW-designed 190kW/580Nm TDV6 – with a 10-speed Ford automatic gearbox and full-time all-wheel drive.

It will be sold alongside two versions of Ford's 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo diesel engine – a single-turbo model developing 125kW and 405Nm, and a twin-turbo version, offering a Ranger-matching 154kW and 500Nm (outside of Europe).

The 154kW twin-turbo engine will be fitted as standard with a 10-speed automatic and selectable four-wheel drive, as per the Ranger. Meanwhile, the single-turbo mill offers six-speed manual and automatic gearboxes overseas, with rear- and four-wheel drive – though an auto gearbox and 4x4 appear most likely for Australia.

The surprise addition among the bunch is a turbocharged 2.3-litre four-cylinder petrol engine with 222kW and 452Nm, which will be sold in Australia. It's paired with a 10-speed automatic gearbox and permanent all-wheel drive.

In Europe, the 3.0-litre diesel V6 is cut to 177kW/600Nm, while the 2.0-litre twin-turbo diesel quotes 150kW/500Nm. The latter engine in Europe is offered with six-speed manual, six-speed auto and 10-speed auto gearboxes, with permanent all-wheel drive.

The entry-level 2.0-litre single-turbo diesel is also available overseas in a 110kW/350Nm tune, with a five-speed manual and rear-wheel drive. This is focused on African markets.

As with its predecessor – and the new Ford Ranger – the new Volkswagen Amarok ute comes with a standard 80-litre fuel tank. Meanwhile, the capacity of the AdBlue tank for the diesels has increased by 13 litres to 19.3 litres.

Buyers will also be able to choose between two different 4Motion four-wheel-drive systems dependent on the engine: one part-time system with two- and four-wheel-drive modes, and one full-time system with a two-speed (high and low range) transfer case for added ability off road.

2023 Volkswagen Amarok chassis

Helping to extend the new Amarok's off-road properties is a considerable increase in fording depth, which has increased from 500mm to 800mm.

Towing capacity has also been increased to a maximum of 3.5 tonnes globally – though this capacity has been available on the old Amarok in Australia since 2017.

The new Volkswagen Amarok features double-wishbone front and leaf-spring, beam-axle rear suspension – the same set-up used by the Ford Ranger.

As with the first-generation Amarok – but new for the latest Ford Ranger – the rear shock absorbers are mounted outboard of the chassis rails to free up space and provide “more car-like” properties than competitor utes with inboard-mounted dampers, according to VW Commercial Vehicles marketing board member Lars Krause.

“The new model builds on what we established with the original model in terms of performance and dynamics. It’s a car that’s equally at home on the road driving to dinner as it is off-road on the way to a construction site,” says Krause.

To differentiate the driving properties from the Ford Ranger, the new Volkswagen Amarok receives its own unique steering tune.

The Aventura model also adopts a bespoke suspension tune, with springs and dampers that differ from those of the top-end Ford Ranger.

The 2023 Volkswagen Amarok is due in Australian showrooms in January or February next year. Pricing is expected to be announced later in the 2022, likely around November.

Production of the second-generation Volkswagen Amarok is scheduled to kick off for overseas markets in Ford’s Silverton factory in Pretoria, South Africa in September – with the first Australian models to begin rolling off the line towards the end of the year.

Meanwhile, the first-generation model will continue to be produced at the existing Volkswagen plant in Pacheco, Argentina for various South American markets.

However, this will not be the case in Australia, as the current-generation Amarok will not pass new ADR 85 side-impact crash safety regulations that come into force for older commercial vehicles November 2022.

With sales of the first-generation model launched in 2010 totalling more than 830,000 worldwide, Volkswagen has high hopes for its successor, key markets for which include Australia, New Zealand, Africa, the Middle East and Europe.
